Frequently Asked Questions

The Firm’s annual billable hour expectation for associates is 1,800 hours, with up to 30 hours of pro bono or firm committee work counting toward this total. Meeting or exceeding the 1,800-hour threshold establishes the baseline for automatic bonus eligibility. While billable hours are not the sole factor considered, they remain an important component in assessing an associate’s shareholder eligibility. In addition, all associates may be considered for a discretionary bonus in recognition of strong overall performance.

When evaluating performance, the Firm places significant value on an associate’s ability to produce high-quality work and provide exceptional service to clients and colleagues. Effective legal practice requires substantial time to thoughtfully analyze, plan, guide, and deliver the best possible results for our clients’ complex legal needs.

To help associates navigate private practice successfully, the Firm’s Professional Development Committee works closely with mentors to manage workflow, identify areas for growth, and balance opportunities both inside and outside the Firm. In addition, the Marketing and Business Development department serves as a valuable resource to support associates in developing and expanding their practices.

At GableGotwals we believe that everyone should have access to legal representation, which is why we take on a number of pro bono cases each year. Not only does taking on such cases benefit the public, but it also aids in the development of our attorneys’ skills and sense of professional and public service. In addition to taking on a number of individual cases, our firm partnered with Catholic Charities, the YWCA, and local law firms to provide pro bono legal services to evacuees applying for an Adjustment of Status after relocating to Tulsa from Afghanistan.

Many of our attorneys are involved with CASA of Oklahoma and Tulsa Attorneys for Children. Each year, the Firm, along with personal contributions from its attorneys, supports Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma, making us one of the organization’s leading donors year after year. Attorneys also dedicate their time to providing pro bono support to Legal Aid clients.

GableGotwals has been recognized for its pro bono work with the 2025 Good Apple Award for Pro Bono Firm of the Year from the Oklahoma Appleseed Center for Law and Justice. Additionally, we were honored to win the 2024 Summer Pro Bono Challenge in the Large Firm category, presented by Oklahoma Access to Justice.

Our attorneys and professional staff are our most valuable assets. GableGotwals understands the challenge of balancing a demanding career with home and family life, and we are committed to providing our attorneys with a comprehensive benefits program to support that balance. Among other benefits, we currently provide individual and family medical, dental, vision, flexible spending accounts for health care and childcare costs, life and disability insurance, pet insurance, as well as an employer-funded 401(k) profit sharing plan.

The Firm pays registration fees and dues for bar and professional associations, as well as continuing legal education costs and other professional development expenses. New associates are reimbursed for Bar review courses and fees associated with the Bar exam and admission.

The Firm offers Modified Work Arrangements (MWAs) for eligible attorneys, which may include flex time, compressed work schedules, telecommuting, reduced hours, or a combination of these options. All MWAs require prior approval from the CEO and Managing Shareholder, and are considered based on business needs, client service, and practice area requirements. Requests must be submitted to the Director of HR and Culture, CEO, and Managing Shareholder, and approval is not guaranteed. Firm management retains full discretion to approve, modify, or rescind any arrangement.

Although we do have practice groups, our Firm is organized along two functional lines – litigation and transactional work. Within these two areas, some attorneys specialize in specific practice areas or industries, while others maintain a broader, generalist approach. Associates are encouraged to choose between litigation and transactional practice upon starting employment with the Firm. However, no choice is ever final and, in the event a new associate wants to try the other area, that opportunity exists.
